Getting proper audio on a video production is one of the most important things for any filmmaker. For those on a budget, it’s even that much more difficult to find quality solutions without breaking the bank. Now I won’t tell you that the Trustin Voice Recorder is the answer to all your audio needs. That would be silly. However I will tell you that if you are on a budget, this has a lot to offer under $40.

Check out the video for the full breakdown, with tests in a couple environments, but if you don’t have time or just don’t want to, I present below the meat and potatoes.

Pros:

> Size/Low-profile. Easily hidden if needing to record in-shot, or take notes without drawing attention to yourself.
> Dual power solution. It has an internal battery that charges and there is also a backup AAA standard battery.
> Recording folders organized by default.
> Solid audio, noise reduction.
> microUSB for charging and transfer.
> On-body speaker for quick review.
> Built-in headphone jack for review.

Cons:

> No microphone port. You are restricted to the on-body microphone.
> No built-in mounting  thread. Placing  this could prove challenging.

Should you buy?

If your need is immediate, then absolutely. I think if you’ve only got $40 to work with and want something better than on-camera audio, this is a great way to go. If you’ve got some time, and can save up, then I’d upgrade to the Zoom and a Lavalier for about $100 which is what I used in the video.
